I read Anne Frank`s diary as a child and have since been fascinated by her story and by the heroism of those who risked all to help. I recently watched “A Small Light” on Disney+ and was so intrigued by the story of Miep and the others who worked so hard to keep the inhabitants of the secret annex safe.

All three of us firmly believe that the inspiration in this story — and Miep made a lot of this herself — is that she is so ordinary, and that anyone can do this. There is a children's story in which a little child in a wooden cradle is washed away by a flood and is floating on the raging waters, in danger of sinking, when a cat leaps onto the cradle and jumps from side to side of it, keeping the cradle afloat until it touches solid ground again and the child is safe.

Children were always in each other's company, charging off in little packs to the Amstelpark swimming pool, or perhaps speaking in singsong as they walked to and from school in bunches. She arrived in Leiden in 1920 and remained with her foster family, the Nieuwenburgs, when they moved to Amsterdam in 1924.That lady was, in fact, Miep Gies, the Otto Frank employee who’d spent day after day for 25 months walking into and out of the very same building as she helped hide her boss and his family from the Nazis during the Second World War. The team behind the new Disney+ series, too, say they felt “huge responsibility” when creating the show.

Of course no-one can tell exactly all what happended to them in the camps but the book does detail some of what is known from people who were prisoners along with Anne, her sister and mother but survived and could pass on information to Anne's father before he died many years later. Kugler and [Johannes] Kleiman kept the business going and brought books and magazines along with them for the people in hiding. The diary of Anne Frank — written as she hid with her family and others in the annex of an Amsterdam building while Hitler’s Nazis hunted for Jews in the Second World War — is one of the most widely read books in the world. After years of reading other histories and memoirs of the holocaust then hearing of Miep Gies` passing I heard of this book. Gold has received the Best of the Best Award given by the American Library Association, the Anti-Defamation League’s Merit of Educational Distinction Award and a Christopher Award for affirming the highest values of the human spirit, among other awards and prizes.Risking her life every single day—and almost getting caught several times—Miep brought food, emotional support, and news of the war to Anne’s family in their hiding space. The hungry little eleven-year-old Viennese girl with the tag tied around her neck and a bow in her hair had faded away entirely. Otto Frank had just relocated from Germany and had been appointed managing director of Opekta's recently expanded Dutch operations.
